Contra Plagam
John Hearne
Intercession against the plague for SATB and Piano
Text by Sedulius Scottus
Sedulius Scottus was an Irish-born scholar and poet who flourished in the 9th century. This poem is an impassioned plea for deliverance from the plague. In this setting for chorus and piano the voices alternate between desparate cries and yearning prayers, while the piano gives out various clangorous alarums interspersed with gentle calming assurances. The melody used in the final stanza is based on a 15th century Hussite chorale.
